problems are plaguing the areas. one of the hardest hits areas in the state. a red oak fell right at the height and this is a big job with crews from alabama tackling. and it was a big job for families to figure out how to stay dry and warm tonight. it has been shy of 24 hours since the television was on. >> we have been making the best of it. we have a wood stove that we have kept running and eating things out of cans. >> reporter: this has been echoed all over the county. some with powers, some didn't, and some made their own. this store had a huge generator out back and shopping center was out accept for them and power

outages jumped from block to block and some had it, but others said just a flicker. >> my main concern was the pump going out and the trees. >> reporter: people are working around the clock almost but the damage is so extensive it maybe one till the end of the week before everyone is reconnected. in hartford county. >> the county land fill is opened tomorrow and we are running the closings from earlier so you can be prepared or delayed millions of gallons of sewage sent into the river. jeff has more on those repairs.

>> reporter: it is not easy living near a waste water plant but today it is even tougher. today, some of the water comes from the toilets of about a quarter of a million people. >> i thought it was from the septic tank. >> reporter: high winds took down one of the lines powering the plant but a second feeder line that served as a back up and that left the generators to handing 25 millions of gallons pouring into the river over a 12 hour period. >> it is something we need the work with bge on, getting more reliable power to this facility. without power, it just accountant run. >> reporter: they said bge

didn't send anyone out until seven hours after it was reported and it took seven hours to get repaired. >> i have ordered an audit to see what happened and make sure we prevent this. >> reporter: the sewage only made up about 1% of the water. >> treating the sewage will take 4-5 days to bring it back up to full capacity. until then, that percent will continue to seep into the river. >> we will see what areas look like a day after sandy came through. >> and spinning out over.
